Splitting his time between Burlington, VT and New York City, David Hyman records some lovely psychedelic pop under the moniker Dog. There’s quite a bit to be said for the meditative pop song, and Hyman pulls this off repeatedly on his latest record, Karmageddon. The eleven track disc was produced by Hyman and Dougie Bowne. N.B. that Bowne has worked with the indisputably best band of all time, Cibo Matto.

Hyman says that “Dog places it emphasis on creating a musically transcendent experience that reflects his decade long commitment to meditation and self knowledge. Blah, blah, blah . . .” Having read about a million masturbatory press kits, this cynicism is more than welcome. From a few emails with Hyman, I can tell however that his sarcasm is expertly separated from his music, because despite the guise, attitudes don’t get you on stage with bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and The Slip.

Things that do secure desirable shows like the aforementioned ones that Dog takes credit for are notes like the one Hyman wrote on the back of his press kit. “Ben, thanks for the prompt response. I hope you enjoy the record . . . from a fellow tribe member (whatever that means) – David Hyman.”
